42 Discoveries – What I know Photography

#5 SUBVERT THE GREENS, ALWAYS.

If there is one stand-out characteristic of digital photography it’s the inferior rendering of greens. This is unfortunately intrinsic to its nature, despite advancements in what’s known as colour science.

One of the truly beautiful characteristics of film (i.e. analogue) photography is how it truly captures the colour green. Yes, every shade of green will show up differently depending on which film stock you choose, but all of them look better than anything that comes out of even the most sophisticated digital camera. It’s part of what makes the film aesthetic so pleasing and why film has achieved a renaissance amongst top photographers and their clients. But at the same time, you can happily shoot digital after learning how to add some analogue in while taking some digital out, and one of the easiest ways to do this is by manipulating the greens in your photograph.
